Here's a fashion story I shot on Thursday at the Rainbow Lodge. I've always wanted to do a fashion shoot at a motel, and jumped at the chance when the opportunity arose recently. The model is Jenny Bergweiler, hair and makeup by Pamela at Face/BodyFX, styling by me, extra pair of hands/all-around helpfulness provided by Stephani Brazil, and homemade cookies provided by Angie at the Red Rolling Pin. Many thanks to Erik and Janina at the Rainbow Lodge for having us. Everything came out great!

Fine art photographer in Colorado: Charlotte at 100

I made these portraits of Charlotte last month on my birthday. At 100 years old, Charlotte is the oldest person I've ever photographed. She was born in 1911. Imagine all that her eyes have seen! Although Charlotte never had children and has outlived all her family, please don't feel sorry for her -- she has lived an amazing life and is very happy to be able to live at home instead of a facility. She has several caretakers who take shifts to look after her, so she is never alone. She also has wonderful neighbors who are always concerned with her well being. One of her caretakers, Judy, is a good friend of mine and always likes to tell me about the funny things Charlotte says.

I had a wonderful afternoon hanging out with Charlotte. It was a great way to celebrate my birthday (she called me a "baby", and I guess from her perspective I am!). I'm so glad I was able to make these portraits of her to commemorate her 100th year.

Charlotte has been an animal lover her entire life. The long driveway to her home is dotted with birdhouses like this one.

My welcoming committee was Tilly, Charlotte's ancient beagle.

At one time Charlotte and her husband had quite a few dogs, thus the enormous great room of the house was divided by a wrought iron fence to keep them contained. I spied Charlotte in a prayerful pose through the bars and quickly snapped off three frames. She's not actually praying (she's watching TV), but I just really liked this moment.

Charlotte spends a lot of time sleeping, so her caretakers pass the time by reading, watching TV and doing jigsaw puzzles.

Here we've moved her into a position near a window. She joked that it's okay for me to heavily retouch her portraits.

The basics of developing your modeling portfolio

Do you want to be a model? Before you take the plunge and do an elaborate, expensive and time-consuming "fashion shoot" to impress your future agent, it's important to know what any agent is REALLY looking for in a potential model. These five photos (taken this afternoon) are exactly what an agent wants to see when you come knocking on their door. A few things to keep in mind:

1) Don't have your Uncle Bob take them. Just because someone has a "nice" camera doesn't make them a photographer, and more than having a nice frying pan makes you a chef. Hire someone who has a great understanding of posing and light. These photos look simple, but actually took a great deal of expertise to pull off well. Having great, PROFESSIONAL photos increases your chances of getting signed.
2) Keep the wardrobe as simple as possible. Don't go shopping, unless you don't happen to own a decent pair of jeans and a tank top. Remember, this shoot is basically to achieve a great head shot and full length shot. You're not trying to sell any clothes or products here -- the focus should be on you.
3) Don't wear too much makeup. This is the NUMBER ONE thing that aspiring models do wrong when they come to me for this kind of shoot. Just foundation, powder, blush and mascara are all you need. Oh and a little Carmex for your lips!
4) Keep your hair simple and undone. Enough said.

A good photo showing you with a natural smile wearing very little makeup and clean, unstyled hair.

A full length shot that shows off your cute figure, hopefully in form-fitting, uncomplicated clothing. Shorts or even a swimsuit are okay, but don't go for a vampy or sexy look.

A beautiful, tight head shot with natural makeup and hair, and minimal retouching (sorry!), so people can see what you really look like.

And yes, one boring "school portrait" head shot with natural hair and makeup, smiling prettily, is what your agent wants to see! The REAL you without embellishment.

Senior portraits in Black Forest: Tom

This is Tom, my friend John's younger son. They live in France, so Tom did the "foreign exchange student" thing so to speak, living with his grandmother here in Colorado to get the American high school experience. And he did it all, including playing football! This would have been Tom's senior year, but he was forced to move back to France because of health reasons. I took these senior portraits of Tom while John was here in September to bring him back to France. Tom gave me about 10 minutes -- I did the best I could! I love the sunsets out by Judy's house, so I made the most of those 10 minutes and got a few cool images of Tom looking like a superhero. Bonne chance, Tom! I hope you enjoyed your year abroad!

Ashley has true high fashion potential! She's extremely tall and thin, and has absolutely ridiculous cheekbones. And those huge hazel eyes! She's like a baby Christy Turlington with a touch of Angelina Jolie. Gorgeous. I've done a couple of shoots with her, most recently this one on August 10th in Calhan, Colorado. I spent a lot of time and energy scouting the location, figuring out the exact time of day to shoot, and sourcing wardrobe. Ashley was absolutely fearless standing up there on those huge rocks at sunset! Many thanks to my talented hair and makeup artist, Pamela of Face/Body FX, and my boyfriend Pat, who tirelessly carried gear and held reflectors. The whole shoot came together beautifully and I'm thrilled with the results!

I'm so behind in blogging! Molly, Justin and I actually took these engagement portraits at Biedleman Park in Colorado Springs on a wonderful day at the end of October. It's absolutely my favorite time of year to photograph people, especially people in love! You can tell from the pictures what a fun, relaxed time we had that day. I'll be photographing Molly and Justin's wedding next year. I can't wait!

We did most of his senior portraits in downtown Colorado Springs, but since a rainstorm was looming over the city that day we ended up running all over town to avoid the weather. It eventually caught us, though, but by then we were all the way down by the airport! Thanks for the fun shoot, JJ! I hope you dig your senior portraits!

We did Rachel's senior portraits in Old Colorado City a few weeks ago on a perfect fall day. What a cool kid! She's REALLY into the Beatles and REALLY into shoes. Hmmmm, sounds a little like someone I know: me! We had so much fun taking her portraits, we were sad when we had to stop for the day. Rachel, I hope you had as much fun as I did. You're gorgeous!

Rachel brought her guitar to the shoot. We decided to use it in a few setups.

Colorado Springs baby photographer -- introducing Baby C!

C is for cute! Oh my goodness will you look at this ginger-haired little princess?!? Her parents, Bobbi and Sean, are longtime clients -- I shot their wedding in the summer of 2008, and since then I've done portraits with them every fall with their beloved yellow lab, Chewy. Well move over, Chewy, I hate to break it to ya but there's an even cuter family member now! We did these portraits when Baby C was about six weeks old, in their home. I fell in love at first sight. Isn't she beautiful?

I ended my wedding season with Rick and Tatiana's gorgeous wedding at the Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel and the Cheyenne Mountain Resort. Tatiana looked AMAZING in her fabulous gown, and of course I love all the pomp and circumstance of a military wedding. And even though it was freezing cold out, everyone in the wedding party suffered a few minutes of chill for Rick and Tatiana to get a classic Air Force group shot in front of the many planes on display at the Academy. So worth it! Thanks guys for ending my wedding season with a bang!

I traveled all the way to Casper, Wyoming to document Bill and Chelsea's wedding at the Three Crowns Golf Club, and it was SO much fun! They have some crazy friends! Since I've never been to Casper, it was even more fun for me to shoot, because I love working in new locations. We ended up with perfect weather and a beautiful sunset during the ceremony. The next morning we wandered around downtown Casper and created some amazing bride and groom portraits to boot. Chelsea and Bill, I had a blast! Thanks for having me -- I enjoyed every minute!

S & T's intimate wedding in the Garden of the Gods

Shaun and Tanya were married on a misty, chilly day last month in the Garden of the Gods. Normally the view is clear and extremely bright there, but on this day it was beautifully soft and misty. In all my years living here I've never seen the Garden of the Gods look quite like it did that day. It was magical! The fact that there were only nine people there including me and the officiant made it extra special. Collectively we braved the chill and had a truly memorable afternoon. Congratulations Tanya and Shaun!

It's Baby M, and he's officially a toddler now! I've been documenting Baby M since before he was born, and it's been amazing watching him grow. Hard to believe he was a little newborn peanut only a few short months ago -- how time does fly. I didn't think it was humanly possible for him to get any cuter, but my goodness he has upped the ante with each photo shoot! I love his chubby little cheeks and big hazel eyes. Such a punkin!

A & E's rather awesome engagement session

Well this was a fun one! Alex proposed to Emily in the Garden of the Gods, so naturally we took some nice portraits there and they're wonderful, but the ones that came AFTER the Garden of the Gods were the icing on the cake! Alex is an Air Force pilot, and they both wanted aircraft to feature significantly in their engagement portraits. Off we went to the Peterson Air and Space Museum (on Pete Field), where there are quite a few really cool vintage planes and jets. The sun was just going down and it was the most dramatic lighting I could have hoped for. These guys seriously rocked it! I think this is my favorite engagement session ever! :o)

The funny story behind this photo: I asked Emily and Alex to smooch for the camera. There were lots of tourists around watching, including a family with little kids. As Alex and Emily kissed, one of the children said loudly, "Ewwwwww! They're kissing!" It was hilarious!

I love to photograph a couple who are so obviously, madly in love. I also love a new wedding experience, which I got to have this time since Marian is Polish (his name is pronounced MAR-yon, roughly). He has a huge family, most of whom flew in from all over the U.S. and from Poland. I learned how to say "smile" in Polish (don't ask me to spell it here!), and I heard a lot of cool Polish disco music during the reception. It was great! Noah and Stephanie are feverishly planning their wedding for next spring. Since they're so new to Colorado Springs (having recently relocated from the DC area) I had a fun time showing them their new downtown when we took these pictures last month. Aren't they cute?

This heart-shaped sculpture materialized downtown recently. When I saw it I knew I had to use it for some romantic picture or other!

Wally and Janie are both commercial pilots and don't live here. I'm glad they chose Colorado Springs as the destination for their intimate summer wedding. Only their very nearest and dearest made the trip to witness their vows, for a grand total of 10 people including the bride and groom! I love that. The beautiful Summit House Bed and Breakfast hosted the event in their charming, hidden garden. It was lovely, romantic and very sweet, and I feel honored to have been a small part of it. The Summit House is the former home of prominent Colorado Springs family the Olsons -- if you're local you'll know them by Olson's Plumbing and Heating. It was built around 1918, and it's gorgeous.

Colorado wedding photojournalism: Carol + Andrew

Andrew and Carol met at Adams State College in Alamosa, over pizza at a mutual friend's place. They are so cute together! I'd describe their wedding as a perfect blend of the casual and the elegant, with a killer party (karaoke, anyone?) to boot. I should also mention that, since technically Carol and Andrew have been married since last year, theirs was one of the briefest wedding ceremonies I've ever documented. I think the processional was actually longer than the ceremony itself ;^) Yes, it was definitely all about the party -- and what a fun party it was!

The reality of a crazy wedding day -- don't forget to eat, people!

I'm glad the tradition of a penny in the shoe for good luck still perserveres. Traditions like these are a big part of the fun.

Behold beautiful Kate, who told me she wanted senior portraits that looked like an Urban Outfitters catalog shoot. She also told me that she loves nature, so we went to Red Rock Canyon and schlepped around for a bit, taking pictures here and there. She turned out to be an awesome little model! And look at those amazing blue eyes! I think she'd fit right into the latest Urban Outfitters catalog, don't you?

Wedding at the Cliff House: Katie + Chad

From Seattle by way of Chicago, Katie, Chad and all their loved ones traveled from far and wide to congregate in Manitou Springs for this very special event. Despite the scorching Fourth of July weekend weather, it was a fabulous time! Chad and Kate's ceremony was incredibly personal and sweet (officiated by their good friend Jerusha), and the party was bumpin' all night long. Katie is truly one of the most camera shy brides I've ever had -- she was a real trooper putting up with me! Thank you Katie, I hope these pictures made it worth the agony! :o)

Jenn & Marin's wedding in Colorado Springs

On a day that started with rain and hail then progressed to patented Colorado sunshine, Jenn and Marin braved the elements and tied the knot. Jenn painstakingly handmade all the table decor and place cards, and lots of quirky personal touches (like using a baseball bat to swat the bouquet at all the single ladies) were the highlight of this fun wedding. These two are a lot of fun and I just love how close and loving their families are. Congrats Marin and Jenn, it was a great day!!!

Colorado wedding photography: Noelle + Bob

Bob, Noelle and their families came all the way from Illinois to celebrate their union. This means I didn't even get to officially meet them until a couple of days before the wedding, although we had many phone conversations in the run up to their big day. They turned out to be just as lovely in person as they were over the phone. They are the embodiment of midwestern friendliness! Noelle has two sons from a previous marriage, and it was very touching to witness how much Bob cares for those boys, and how much they love him back. It was wonderful to be a part of such a special day. I'm so lucky to be the one who got to document all that love.

We did these a couple of weeks before the big day, mostly in Monument Valley Park with a quick stop at CC. These guys are so cute and completely gaga for each other. You can see by the pictures that it was a beautiful summer day, a perfect afternoon to capture a couple in love :^)

Janet and Gene were married on June 5th in Manitou Springs, with family members traveling from as far away as Germany to celebrate with them. Most of Janet's loved ones flew in from New Jersey, which was great because these people know how to party! ;o) We had such a blast, and Janet made me cry three times, darn it. I'm such a sucker for a sentimental bride!

Janet got a little emotional right before Gene was to see her for the first time that day.

Gene and Janet had a traditional Jewish wedding ceremony, immediately after which he threw her over his shoulder and double-timed it down the aisle, cracking everybody up.

Janet dislikes being photographed -- I tried my hardest not to drive her crazy all day! I think she looks excited and beautiful in this photo.

Say hello to the R family! Drew and Kelly are parents to a pair of adorable twin girls, B and K, who were just shy of their third birthday when we made these portraits last month. They are SO cute! As you can see, they're not identical twins, and their personalities are distinctly different as well. I really enjoyed spending the afternoon documenting a day in the life of this sweet little family!

Introducing the M family! Erin and Mac have two beautiful kids 15 years apart in age. We did these pictures at high noon on a VERY sunny day (and you photographers out there know how challenging that is!), only a couple of weeks before they packed up and moved out of state. It'll be a while before they get to see Mac's mom again, so these portraits will help remind them all of happy times together in Colorado.

Just a few pictures of Erin and Mac, because they have plenty of pictures of the kids but NO pictures of the two of them.

Not my usual subject, indeed! In the past year or so Pat and I have been checking out roller derby on Saturday nights at the City Auditorium. Naturally, a visit to the King's Chef Diner is always in order afterward! This is where I met Jess, who works there. The first time I saw her I knew I wanted to photograph her. Over time I got to know her a little, and when I asked she enthusiastically agreed to sit for me. I made these portraits on April 25th.

I know Jess has a very unusual look, but I think she's beautiful.

Did you watch the royal wedding? I did! Yes, Prince William and his bride make a beautiful couple, but I have an even more gorgeous couple to show you! Rain was predicted and we got sunshine, Morgan looked like a modern day Grace Kelly, and Mark was dashing in his dress blues. I love a good old fashioned saber arch, and when zombies enter the fray... well that's just icing on the proverbial wedding cake!

Here's Denver's reigning Miss Modernism, Jaime Askvig! We did this photo shoot last weekend in Denver with the help of our mutual friend Jenn. Jaime is as in love with mid-century modern style as I am, and between the two of us I think we have enough 1950's-60's clothing, jewelry and accessories to start our own vintage shop.

This shoot was a blast! I couldn't resist making a faux Vogue cover out of one of my favorite shots. Congratulations Jaime on your win, you're the best Miss Modernism ever!

I'm chronicling Baby M's first year and haven't seen him since November. I didn't think it was humanly possible for him to get any cuter than he was then, but clearly I was wrong! He's just adorable and I want to pinch his chubby little cheeks all day long. We did these portraits in the client's home, and M was a real superstar! So was the family dog, Louie, who steals a little piece of my heart every time I see him. I can't wait for M's first birthday -- imagine how much fun that's going to be!

I bet you didn't know that I do Mitzvah photography! Here's a Bat Mitzvah I photographed recently -- actually I did the rehearsal, since this particular temple doesn't allow photography during the real thing. Afterward D and her mom met me at a nearby park for some fashion-y portraits. Very cool!

For those who've never atttended a Mitzvah, the celebrant spends most of it chanting in Hebrew. I like this shot a lot and never would have been able to get this close during the real event. That's why I prefer shooting the rehearsal instead.

Last month Pat and I made a short trip to Texas to attend the Digital Wedding Forum Convention and the Imaging USA trade show in San Antonio. You may remember this sweet little wedding I shot last year. Dave and Kathy, who are in their sixties, found love a second time around. It was so much fun getting to know them and documenting their big day. It isn't often that I get a couple at this stage in their lives. These two were like teenagers! I'm happy to report that they are enjoying their new life together, doing lots of traveling and anticipating a new grandchild. I hope you enjoy looking at their album. I think it came out beautifully!

Kathy chose this bronze weave material for the cover. Isn't it gorgeous?

For each of them, this was their second time down the aisle. It was very touching to see how giddy and emotional they were.

Dave and Kathy asked me to get a picture of everyone in attendance, so during the party I wandered around and literally asked every single person for a smile. Two and a half spreads of the album were devoted to these images of their friends and family.

I want to share some of the gorgeous albums I've been creating for my clients lately! Ashaley and Sean were married last year at the Pinery. She chose red for their album color, to match her bridesmaids' dresses. The book is 10x10" with a metal cameo featuring a romantic image of their first dance. The whole album is just lovely! They now have an heirloom to help them remember such a perfect day, and something truly meaningful to hand down to their children some day. :o)

Happy New Year! I can't believe that it's 2011! I'd love to show you some images from my last wedding of 2010. Alexandra and Rick had their wedding and reception at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort. Even though it was literally the shortest day of the year (and technically the first day of winter), we got really lucky with a balmy, sunshiny afternoon. Even so, the ceremony was a very brief five minutes, just in case! Alexandra took her style cues from 1930's Hollywood, and boy did she look glamorous. The jewelry, the fishnet veil, the sleek updo -- she looked like a starlet with a handsome leading man on her arm. Warmest congratulations Alex and Rick, your wedding was fabulous!

On November 11th, Veterans Day, I donated my services to a good cause called Weddings for Warriors. It's a way for our servicemen and women to celebrate the wedding of their dreams for free! There were 14 Weddings for Warriors in Colorado Springs that day. I was very honored to be a participant.

My clients, Jennifer and JJ, have actually been married for a decade (although they look so young!), so they renewed their vows instead. It was very touching, especially JJ's vows. All professional services were donated, as well as Jennifer's gown. The Fine Arts Center generously offered their beautiful new wing; Gentry's Flowers provided the bouquet, and Carolyn Dekok of Classic Designs lent her excellent event planning skills. It was a beautiful event!

Some of my favorite clients! Shanda and Marcus recently celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary, and on the big day I photographed them on the grounds of the Briarhurst Manor in Manitou Springs (many thanks to Allison there for giving us the run of the mansion!). Shanda, who had their first baby less than three short months ago, looked incredible in her original wedding dress, and Marcus got a snappy new suit just for the occasion. They looked hot! And madly in love. Happy anniversary you two!

I first photographed W when he was only four days old. How time flies. Last Thursday was his first birthday! We took these family pictures a couple of weekends ago, just in time for the peak of fall color. W was already walking and it was so cute. A little wobbly, maybe, but getting better at it every day. Happy birthday W, you're already a ladykiller!

I absolutely love the expression on his face in this one. Adorable.

Alex and Rick are having their wedding right around Christmastime at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort. We did their engagement portraits a couple of weeks ago in Cheyenne Cañon on a beautiful, warm fall day. It was a lot of fun. Even the dogs got into it!

I got exactly three decent pictures with the dogs, Athena and Lady, and exactly one of those had everyone looking my way. Ha! It was worth the effort -- what a great portrait :o)

Cheyenne Canon is so beautiful! They ordered a large print of this one. It's going to look great in their home!
